Mahagauri Keychain · Navratri Night 8
Calm, bright and made new.
Mahagauri means "the Great Radiant One". After years of hard penance, Parvati was washed in the waters of the Ganga and came out shining white, like a conch shell, the moon or jasmine. She is the eighth of the nine forms of Durga, worshipped on Ashtami.
She stands for a fresh start: the hard part is done and what is left is peace. Carry her for a clean slate, a calm mind or anything you have worked hard for.
What the details mean
- Radiant white: her skin and clothes shine white as a conch, the moon and jasmine. Purity and peace.
- Trishul: the trident. Power over past, present and future.
- Damaru: Shiva's little drum, the beat that keeps the world going.
- Blessing hands: "fear not", and giving.
- Full moon: glowing behind her head. Calm, cool light.
- White bull: her ride, from her prayer verse. Steady, patient strength.
- Purple sari: the colour of night eight.
These are the common readings. Families and regions tell them in different ways, and that's part of the joy of it.
