In the Devi Mahatmya (chapter 2), the gods arm Durga to defeat the buffalo demon Mahishasura. Six of these eight are the weapons they give her: Shiva's trishul, Vishnu's chakra, Indra's vajra, Vayu's bow and arrows, Kala's sword and Vishwakarma's axe. The other two aren't in her list: the gada is Hanuman's and the vel is Murugan's. The shankha, Varuna's conch, is sold on its own.
