Facing the dark, and getting through it.

Kalaratri means "the Dark Night". She is the seventh and fiercest of the nine forms of Durga. She looks terrifying, but only to what is harmful. To the people who call on her she is kind, which is why she is also called Shubhankari, "she who does good".

She is a reminder that you get past fear by facing it. Carry her through a rough patch, a big change or anything that keeps you up at night.

What the details mean

• Dark skin and wild hair: she is the dark itself, and she isn't afraid of it.
• Lightning: a flash of clarity in the dark.
• Sword: cuts through fear and confusion.
• Iron hook: drags out what is harmful.
• Blessing hands: "fear not", and giving. Fierce to harm, gentle to you.
• Donkey: her ride. Humble, tough and keeps going: strength doesn't need to look grand.
• Hibiscus: red flowers at her ears, from her prayer verse. Hibiscus is the flower offered to the fierce goddess.
• Grey sari: the colour of night seven.

These are the common readings. Families and regions tell them in different ways, and that's part of the joy of it.
